What is CEB?

The short answer: Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) is a series of tools and frameworks that are meant to help people develop better coping and resilience though mediation and emotional skills. The ultimate goal of CEB is the cultivation of attentional, cognitive, conation (intention/choice), and emotional balance. Research has shown CEB skills offer a variety of benefits, including increased emotional awareness in one's self and others; a decrease in depressive, anxious, and hostile states; decreased emotional reactivity to stressful events; increased pro-social behavior: and ultimately increased genuine happiness and satisfaction.

Key components of the CEB program include:

  • Understanding each emotion from the inside out, from inside the body to speech and action

  • Recognizing and working with emotional triggers and responses

  • Identifying our emotion-fueled perceptions and how they may distort the way we see the world and lead us to respond with reactivity

  • Deepening awareness and stabilizing attention through meditation

  • Increasing compassion for self and others

  • Cultivating clear values and ethics that foster mental balance

You can read more about the history of CEB here (and we will also cover it within the course itself).

Who will teach this course?

This course is taught by Tom Johnston of The Johnston Group, who is currently Wisconsin's only certified CEB teacher and has studied this material independently for over 10 years prior to receiving his certification.

What makes this Winter cohort unique?

Traditionally, a full CEB course is taught over 42 hours, which can be a significant time commitment for most. The Johnston Group currently offers a 20-hour version of the CEB course which gives participants knowledge and practical skills that will be immediately applicable in their day-to-day lives.

Is this course a replacement for therapy?

While throughout the course we will be exploring concepts and experiences around emotion, CEB is not a therapeutic modality. CEB is not meant to be a replacement for traditional therapy, though the skills and practices of CEB can be incorporated into these modalities. The teachers of this CEB course are not licensed healthcare professionals and are not able to provide diagnoses of any kind.

How does this course work?

The Winter cohort will be held over Zoom or Google Meet to facilitate student participation across various locations. While there is some information that will be shared in lecture/slides, the course is meant to be interactive and is designed to facilitate various learning styles. You can expect group discussion, small group work, dyad work, and journaling, as well as lecture, guided meditation, and light "homework." It is strongly recommended that participants are able to engage in the course with minimal distractions, in a comfortable environment that supports a meditation practice.

How much does this course cost?

The cost for this cohort is $300. Limited scholarships are available prioritizing those with financial need. Cancellations more than 48 hours prior to the first session will receive 100% refund; any cancellations after 48 hours prior to but before the first session begins will receive a 50% refund. An invoice will be sent via Square after registration.
